 In private practice since 1970, Dr. William Steen has over
35 years experience as a cataract and refractive surgeon. He has performed over
45,000 eye operations, including more than 35,000 cataract surgeries and in excess of
14,000 operations using only topical anesthesia, making him the most experienced cataract surgeon in Louisiana.In the field of cataract surgery, he has authored numerous papers and served as a clinical investigator for emerging technology. Upon the recommendation of his co-investigators,
Dr. Steen implanted the first thermolabile intraocular lens in a living, sighted eye on a world-wide
basis.
As a refractive surgeon, Dr. Steen has performed over
31,000 procedures in which the refractive status of the eye has been adjusted, be it through the implantation of an artificial intraocular lens or surgical alteration of the curvature of the cornea. Dr. Steen performed the first Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) procedures in the
Ark-La-Tex for the treatment of both severe nearsightedness and mild farsightedness.
In the arena of excimer laser refractive surgery, Dr. Steen is the most experienced surgeon in the
Ark-La-Tex. During his participation in the Summit Technology Visionary program, Dr. Steen gained worldwide experience on the excimer laser. He performed the first excimer laser surgeries in the
Ark-La-Tex for the treatment of nearsightedness, including the first Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and the first Lamellar In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) procedures.
Dr. Steen is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Additionally, Dr. Steen was the first
Ark-La-Tex eye surgeon to be certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery in both Cataract / Implant Surgery and Incisional Keratotomy (Refractive) Surgery. |
