Following Cataract Surgery |
| After surgery, you will make a brief stay in our recovery area. A nurse will monitor you while you have something to drink. |
| Soon, you will rejoin your family and friends. Before leaving the Steen-Hall Eye Institute, you will receive instructions on caring for your eye after surgery. You will also be given an appointment for your follow-up visit to see how your eye is healing after surgery. |
| Due to the advances in modern cataract surgery, the recovery period is brief. Improvement in vision is usually noticeable immediately following surgery under topical anesthesia and within hours of surgery under a regional anesthetic. |
| Most people are able to resume their normal activities almost immediately after the operation; however, we encourage our patients to take it easy until they grow accustomed to their newly restored vision. There are minimal restrictions on bending or lifting. |
| The doctor will want to see you after surgery to monitor how your eye is healing and to be certain that you gain the full benefits of the operation. Later, we wish to monitor your vision to detect the formation of a secondary cataract. This is a common occurrence after cataract surgery and can be easily treated with a simple laser procedure. |
| The follow-up care related to your cataract surgery can be provided by the surgeon and members of his team here at the Steen-Hall Eye Institute, or you may wish to use an optometrist or ophthalmologist who is located more conveniently to your home. The decision is strictly up to you. We will gladly coordinate your follow-up care with the eye doctor you select.
